Willowbed coppicing at Hambrook

Over two Thursdays, the Canterbury volunteers coppiced the willowbed at Hambrook Marshes. A basket weaving group will begin harvesting withies from the bed next year, but as they only use one year old withies ,all the older growth needed to be cut back. This was quite a job as some of the willows had not been coppiced for several years. The basket weavers joined us for the second day of coppicing, and with their help we got through around 75% of the bed.
