Willesborough Dykes dormouse project

LOCATION:
South Willesborough Dykes, Ashford

DATE:
2013

WHAT WE DID:
The Willesborough Dykes Greenway Path (WDGP) is a new, multi-user green transport route, linking the suburb of Park Farm with Ashford town centre, which opened in 2014. In the process of creating the new route, about a quarter of the scrub growing in this area had to be removed. Surveys had shown that scrub in this area was being used by hazel dormice. We planted a new area of dormouse habitat to replace what had been lost. Volunteers from KSCP and TCV Kent planted some 3900 trees, all native species, creating new woodland . We now carry out ongoing maintenance of the planting and once it is established will monitor the habitat for the presence of dormice.

BENEFITS:
The new areas of habitat will replace the scrub lost in creating the Greenway Path. As well as being habitat for dormice it will also benefit other small mammals and nesting birds.

WHO WE WORKED WITH:
Ashford Borough Council, TCV kent
