Volunteer task : enhancement of an old railway embankment for reptiles at Hambrook Marshes

The old railway embankment at Hambrook ( which originally carried the Elham valley line) has made an ideal place to create reptile habitats. Past work here has seen the removal of scrub and an opening out of the slopes to more sunlight and hence more warmth. Hibernaculum’s have also been installed. We’ll be cutting back (by hand) some of the re-growth on the embankment to enhance its benefits for reptiles.

Volunteer task : woodland thinning and coppicing – Boy’s Hall

The task will be working at Millstream Meadow, part of Boy's Hall ,which is out at Willesborough. The task entails thinning trees there; this will let light into the Aylesford Stream which will improve the river' s wildlife.

Scrub clearance at Petham

We will be clearing scrub from a small area of chalk grassland just outside the village of Petham. It's a beautiful rural location, off Duck Pit Lane, adjoining Woodland Trust-owned Earley Wood.

Dering Wood

This will be our 3rd visit to Dering Wood this year, when we will continue coppicing a scalloped ride through these lovely Woodland Trust woods. We will meet in the Dering Wood car park Smarden Bell Road at 9:30 (not the usual 10.00 start). Pick up at the Stour Centre will be 9:00 - don't forget to let us know if you want picked up!!!

Coppicing at Larkey Valley Wood

This fragment of ancient woodland near Chartham is owned by Canterbury City Council and managed by Kent Wildlife Trust. We spend a day coppicing here every so often to help KWT to manage the woodland. Coppicing is an ancient woodland practice which helps to maintain open areas for plants and butterflies.

Benacre Woods nr. Pluckley
