The Stour Valley is full of
places where you can explore the countryside and see wildlife. One of the
things that makes this valley so special is the variety of different sites
that you can visit: internationally important wetlands with their rich
birdlife; downlands with spectacular views and rare orchids; extensive
ancient woodlands; the historic landscapes of old orchards and parklands.
This guide features 31 sites that reflect this variety.
They range from large national nature reserves to small community sites,
from green spaces in urban settings to picturesque spots in some of the
remotest parts of the Kent Downs. All sites are individually described,
and their locations are indicated on a map of the project area.
The guide is divided into three sections:
1. Sites in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty (AONB)
The Kent Downs AONB is a nationally protected landscape that stretches
across Kent from the Surrey border to the White Cliffs of Dover. About one
quarter of the AONB lies within the KSCP area and here can be found some
of the best landscapes to explore and some excellent wildlife sites.

2. Sites in and around towns
Despite their location, sites in or near urban areas can be good
places to see wildlife. They are also important green spaces for the
community.
3. Other sites in the KSCP project area
The remaining sites all lie within the area the KSCP covers. They
include some of the most important sites for wildlife, including four
national nature reserves and some very scarce habitats.
