Something fishy going on!

Mid Kent Water and the Environment Agency’s Monitoring and Data officer, have been collecting data on migratory Salmonids (salmon and sea trout) in the River Stour since October 2005 as part of the River Stour Migratory Salmonid Monitoring Programme. There are two fish counters installed, one upstream and one downstream of Canterbury. Using specialist equipment, the counters scan the fish as it passes through it producing a silhouette on a computer screen. This is then stored along with other important parameters such as water temperature, time, date, swimming speed and direction on a computer linked up to the equipment. After the fish passes through the scanner, an underwater digital camera is triggered providing either video or still images of the fish. These images are then used as a verification tool for the counter. Migratory Salmonids can now be identified along with the time and the condition they were in.

For more information please contact the Environment Agency’s Kent Fisheries Team.
