The Good, The Bad and The Past
We want to know your thoughts about the countryside that
surrounds Canterbury. We’ve set a competition that challenges you to
take photographs of exactly what you think is the very best and the very
worst elements of the Kent Downs AONB in the Canterbury district, and to
show us any old photos of the area. There are three categories: The
Good, The Bad (Both with two age groups: 14& under and 15& over)
and The Past. The parishes included in this area are Waltham, Petham,
Chartham, Barham, Kingston, Upper Hardes, Lower Hardes, Bishopsbourne,
Bridge, Patrixbourne and Womanswold. You may enter all three categories if
you choose and up to 3 photographs per category. Coloured copies and
digital photo printouts will be accepted if good quality. So send your
photograph (taken within the above mentioned parishes and no bigger than
A4 in size) with your name, age and address on the back, a SAE (for return
of your photo), and post it to the office address. Please also tell us a
bit about your photo i.e. where it was taken and why you think it is
good/bad or a story about the past. All photographs received will be
returned but the KSCP reserves the right to copy and use the images. An
exhibition of the best photographs will be put together and displayed at
various venues throughout 2005, culminating in a special event to promote
the best photographs and present winners with their prizes. So
don’t delay, start snapping today!
Winter warmer at Jumping Downs
On Sunday 12th December, members of the local
community joined forces with the Canterbury Volunteer group to help
maintain the chalk downland of Jumping Downs Local Nature Reserve. The
dedicated hard work of the volunteers focused on clearing and burning
invasive scrub that, without continued management and grazing, would
eventually take over the site. The bonfire was put to good use, cooking
jacket potatoes for lunch followed by mince pies- a positive feast!
Jumping for Joy
Ever read little snippets about Jumping Downs in the
Greenspace Updates and wanted to know where it is? Every wondered just how
it got it’s unusual name? Ever been there and wondered about exactly
what species are there? Well here’s your chance to find out more! With
the help of the Jumping Downs Trust, the KSCP have produced a
comprehensive leaflet covering all you need to know about the nature
reserve. Details that are featured include the sites history, it’s
wildlife value, community involvement, management and location maps. So if
you would like a copy, contact the KSCP and we’ll send one out to you.
What small mammals live in your area?
The KSCP are currently carrying out a small mammal
survey across the project area. The survey will not only help us to work
out how best to manage sites, and feed into our database of species, but
also help the Kent Mammal Group establish a map of each mammal’s
distribution across the whole of Kent. So why not come and join us? We are
holding a free public survey day on Saturday 22nd January at
Kingston Old Railway Line meet at 9.00am at the Barn, Kingston. Suitable
for all ages although children must be accompanied by an adult. If weather
is unfavourable, the event will be called off due to the welfare of the
mammals. Please phone to confirm and avoid disappointment.
