  Study on Sandwich

A new project to look at the history and buildings of Sandwich has received support from English Heritage. Over the next three years archaeologists and historians, supported by the Sandwich Heritage Group, Sandwich Society, Sandwich History Society and other local organisations and individuals, will be looking at the town and port afresh, attempting to discover their earliest origins and trace the way in which Sandwich became the lovely town it is today. Nor will the town be studied in isolation from the local villages. Discoveries of Roman and Anglo-Saxon remains in the countryside nearby throw light on the beginnings of the town itself; the town and its environs need to be studied as a whole.
