Birds in the Mood for
Love
Over 40 adults and children came to Barham Village Hall
on Valentines Day to make bird boxes. The event, organised by The Kentish
Stour Countryside Project, was part of work being done at The New
Churchyard at the Church of St John the Baptist to improve the area for
wildlife.
Valentines Day is traditionally thought to be the time
when birds start nesting, and this year it marks the start of National
Nest Box Week.
Children used pre-cut wood, hammers and nails to create
the boxes, which they could either take home or leave at the hall to be
put up in the churchyard. Nancy Ball who is helping to co-ordinate the
churchyard project provided tea and cakes, as well as lemonade and
biscuits for the children. Members of the church along with Mary Lovick
from the Kentish Stour Countryside Project put some of the boxes up in the
Churchyard after they had been made.
Mary said "this event was very successful, the
children really enjoyed making the boxes and learning about where to put
them and what sort of birds might nest in them. The event was such a
success that there were not enough boxes to go around!"
