Creating a Wetland Wonderland
at University of Kent
The Kentish Stour Countryside Project in partnership
with the University of Kent’s Conservation Society has made use of a
disused piece of land on the University campus to revitalise the area by
creating a bog garden. The project was also part of the ‘Year of the
Volunteer’ celebrations with the aim of encouraging people to ‘have-a-go’
at environmental conservation work.
A group of regular volunteers and University students
firstly cleared the area, (approximately 40 square meters in size) of
existing vegetation before planting new, native plants such as water
forget-me-not, purple loosestrife and ragged robin.
Along with the hard work much fun was had in the mud and
during the clearance the volunteers came across, amongst other things,
some frogs and an old shoe!
Other tasks were also carried out, aimed at both
increasing the biodiversity of the area and creating a more attractive
space for people to enjoy.
