Wye Riverside Project
On Wednesday 14th April Wye
Village Hall Committee, Kentish Stour Countryside Project, Kent Probation
Service, volunteers and local residents joined together at Wye Playing
Fields to undertake the next stage of the conservation work along the
riverside project.
The volunteers basked in the glorious
Easter April sun as they cut back scrub, planted wildflower plugs and
seed, erected bird, bat and Barn Owl boxes.
It is hoped that the fields location
along the river corridor will enable it to be well used by wildlife, as it
will offer refuge and additional habitat. The improvement of the aesthetic
value of the area to the local community will make the riverside walk much
more pleasant.
The placement of a rustic chestnut bench
in the heat of the midday sun was the highlight for all volunteers and
especially main contributor Harry Henderson. Without the financial backing
of Harry, much of the project may not have gone ahead.
Jason Adams, Ashford Countryside Officer
from the Kentish Stour Countryside Project said "All the helpers
worked extremely hard in completing all the elements of the project in a
day, in return Wye now has a fantastic haven for wildlife and local
residents can sit down and soak up the summer sun for years to come".
More conservation work is planned for
the site this summer, including the construction of an otter holt, further
seating and picnic benches. Funding of the project was provided by Harry
Henderson and the Kentish Stour Countryside Project.
