Exciting New Project Gets Underway!

The Kentish Stour Countryside Project is working with Canterbury City Council to help improve a local nature reserve area near Whitstable.

The Wraik Hill and Foxes Cross Local Nature Reserve project has received £12,765 from Viridor Credits Environment Company, through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project aims to improve the site both for wildlife and people.  Over the years the site has suffered from vandalism and fly tipping.  It is hoped that the project will give the reserve a new lease of life.  As part of the project a pond will be created, a hedge will be planted, new gates installed and stock fencing improved, creating more opportunities for conservation grazing schemes.

The Kentish Stour Countryside Project (KSCP) will be leading a group of volunteers from Canterbury College , organised through VSU Youth in Action. VSU is Kent ’s leading youth action volunteering agency.  It contributes to the education of young people by creating opportunities for them to volunteer in their local community, including one-off taster opportunities and longer-term volunteering. Matt Hayes Canterbury Countryside officer for KSCP said, "The Wraik Hill project is a great opportunity to improve one of the area's valuable nature reserves. We hope to have up to 40 volunteers to help plant a native hedge, with a mix of species nearly 200 metre's long.  It will be great to get young people involved in the project and also promote the site as a place to visit.  It's on a lot of people's doorsteps but many won't even know its there."

Wraik Hill and Foxes Cross is located off the Thanet Way (A299) roundabout to Whitstable and Blean, signposted to Wraik Hill.  Details of the reserve can be found on the Canterbury City Council Website, in the special place's section.

The Kentish Stour Countryside Project run regular volunteer days every Thursday in the Canterbury area, including Wraik Hill and Foxes Cross.  To get involved or for more information please contact the KSCP on 01233 813307, or email matthew.hayes@kent.gov.uk.
