Dor’s open for new properties in King’s
Wood
Volunteers from the Kentish Stour Countryside Project
have been helping to protect one of Britain’s most beautiful yet
secretive mammals, the Dormouse. For over five years, King’s Wood has
been part of a monitoring programme which is used to estimate the national
Dormouse population and during this time has contained the second highest
population in Britain.
After a period of continuous use the existing Dormouse
boxes were well worn, so new boxes were purchased with funds from the
Friends of King’s Wood and installed in secret locations across King’s
Wood by Kentish Stour Countryside Project volunteers on a chilly winters
day.
Craig Edwards, Assistant Project Officer at the Kentish
Stour Countryside Project says, " Thanks to the hard work of the
volunteers we are hopeful that the King’s Wood Dormouse population can
continue to thrive and prosper".
Dormice are protected under the 1981 Wildlife and
Countryside Act and it is an offence to intentionally disturb them.
