Painting and planting for Charing Alderbed Meadow

The children of Charing Primary School were set the goal of designing a new logo for an exciting community project taking place in the village. The brief was that the logo needed to reflect what the Charing Alderbed Meadow Project was about using only their imaginations and some colour pens….. The children came up with some wonderful, imaginative designs and the winners were announced in assembly on Friday. There was a winner and runner up from each year group and then an overall winner who was Catherine , all received certificates and prizes. Martin Pym, chairman of the Alderbed meadow project said, ‘Catherine’s logo was chosen as it was beautifully colourful and incorporated all the elements of the project such as a tree, meadow, water and a butterfly symbolising the important wildlife of the site. The logo will be extensively used to promote the project on leaflets, interpretive panels and on the projects headed paper’.

After the prize giving a practical task of hedge planting was undertaken by the school‘s ‘green gang’ lead by teacher Mrs Cotterill and Jason Adams of the Kentish Stour Countryside Project. Jason said, ‘It’s great to get the children and parents out on to the site doing some planting, in this way residents of Charing get to see first hand what the project is all about and better still help to make the project happen.’

The site known as Charing Alderbed Meadow located beyond the playing fields will form part of 14 acres of public open space for all residents to enjoy. The first job to tackle is to create an access road from Pett Lane and a hard standing for parking. The grassland will be restored and the site fenced to allow the reintroduction of light grazing. Hedge planting and laying around the perimeter of the site will be carried out. A small amount of coppicing will be introduced into the woodland and access will be improved with boardwalks across the marshy ground. Much work will be done to use the site as an outdoor environmental classroom, with an education pack, leaflets and interpretive panels.
