Litter ‘winds up’ pond life
On Thursday the 3rd of November, volunteers
from the Kentish Stour Countryside Project will be hard at work clearing
litter from the historic ‘winding pond’ situated in Clowes Wood, which
forms part of the nationally important Blean Woods complex.
The pond once played an important role in the running of
the ‘Crab and Winkle’ way, the railway that ran between Canterbury and
Whitstable. The line opened in 1830 and was the first regular steam
passenger service in the world! Two winding engines hauled the carriages
up Tyler Hill, one was positioned at the halt on Tyler Hill Road and the
other in Clowes Wood. It was water from the Clowes Wood pond that supplied
this engine.
Today, the pond is a haven for wildlife, including
amphibians, dragonflies and other aquatic creatures. The pond is also
popular with anglers, for a number of fish now live in the pond now that
it has been reclaimed by nature.
Sadly, however, where there are people there is litter,
and so, the KSCP and their trusty volunteers have come to the rescue.
Anyone interested in helping with the litter pick or
joining the Kentish Stour Countryside Project on another of their many
practical conservation tasks should ring Jason Mitchell on 01233 813307.
