Green Easter in the Corridor
The Green Corridor project hosted a variety of projects
over the Easter Holiday children from all over Ashford came along to learn
more about the green spaces and parks that make up the Green Corridor. The
fun began with the construction of a Giant Easter Egg at Buxford Meadow
with the help of the Whole Hog Art Company. Children brought along
wrappings from their many eggs and used designs from the wrappings and the
wrappings themselves to cover the Giant Egg. Everyone was amazed at the
amount of packaging that had been collected.
Children from Oak Tree Primary School joined the fun by
learning about their local environment, they constructed a Giant Oak Tree
made from felt and used created images of creatures associated with oak
trees. They learnt more about the animals that live in the Green Corridor
and went on a Photography Trail in Watercress Fields led by local
photographer Laura Thomas. Laura was keen to tap into the children’s
creativity she said ‘I encourage children to use cameras in a variety of
ways and the trail provides a great opportunity for children to look more
closely at their local environment’.
At the end of the first week of the holiday’s local
storyteller Dave Arther visited Singleton Lake and led a group of children
around Singleton Lake and Buxford Meadow. He entertained the children and
adults with stories and songs on a beautifully sunny afternoon. The fun
didn’t stop there, towards the end of the holidays the Whole Hog Art
Celebratory Arts Company visited again this time to Victoria Park pond
where children learnt about the pond and its inhabitants and made arty
amphibians to hop off home with them.
Local artist Nikki Dennington rounded off the events
with a workshop making Magical Mobiles from natural materials. Nikki also
talked about her work which is inspired by the natural environment.
Organiser, Green Corridor Officer, Rosemary Hoare said ‘ we’ve had a
really good response to the events this year and all the children have
learnt a lot about their natural environment which is so important
particularly in Ashford’. Rosemary added, ‘we are planning more events
for the summer for both children and adults so please get in touch if you’d
like more information’.
