Chartham to Canterbury Shared Use Path Consultation Exhibition

Views are being sought on a new shared use pedestrian/cycle path at Chartham Village Hall, Station Road on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd November from 11am to 1.00pm.

The proposed three mile route goes alongside the River Great Stour from Chartham to Canterbury. It would improve National Cycle Route 18 by providing a more direct traffic-free route for this section which currently uses Cockering Road and the A28. It is hoped that some people would travel to work by bike rather than driving. The route would also provide an option for school children, students and shoppers. Many people would just enjoy a pleasant stroll along the river and the path would be suitable for wheelchair users. It is hoped that work could start on the path in spring 2008.

Jon Shelton, Chair of the Working Group that has been developing the project says 'we have been working on this route for many years and we are grateful to the landowners who have agreed access and to the organsations who have agreed funds. If we can complete the project it will make such an attractive, safe route between Canterbury and Charham and a great link to the countryside'.

The path is being developed by a partnership of organisations including Canterbury City Council, Kent County Council, Kentish Stour Countryside Project and Sustrans.

The exhibition will remain at the Village Hall through November so it can still be seen when the hall is open. Plans will also be available at the City Council Offices and Canterbury Library. Views can also be expressed online by visiting the Canterbury City Council web site.
