Seven species of small mammal were caught
at the Charing Aldberbed Meadow last Saturday. The event was part of the
Charing Alderbed Meadow events programme for the summer and 3 children and
7 adults joined Ken West of the Kent Mammal Group to see what had been
caught overnight. Although the site is relatively small it boasts an
excellent diversity of small mammals due to the unimproved grassland and
ancient woodland. Springs rise in the meadow and a chalk stream runs
through the wood making the site wet and more diverse for wildlife. Pygmy
Shrew, Common Shrew, Water Shrew, Bank Vole, Field Vole, Wood Mouse, and a
Yellow Necked Mouse that looked like it had been swimming were the small
mammals caught. The survey has taken place every year for the last 7
years.
The Alderbed Meadow is supported by grants
from Mid-Kent Leader + and the Rail Link Countryside Initiative and events
are organisied by the Kentish Stour Countryside Project on behalf of the
Alderbed Meadow Committee.
