DRAGONS
and DAMSELS at BUXFORD MEADOW
Despite the drizzly rain, the ‘Dragons and Damsels’ event at Buxford
Meadow was well attended by keen youngsters and their Mums.
Rain meant that the dragonflies and damselflies stayed hidden under cover,
but Jon Shelton from the Kentish Stour Countryside Project gave an
introduction to the life cycle of dragonflies and the differences between
dragonflies and damselflies. Then the youngsters proceeded to make their
own colourful creatures with the help of artist Nikki Dennington. Nikki
demonstrated how to bend withies (pieces of willow) into a dragonfly
structure and then to cover the frame with colourful paper to create a
delicate dragonfly. The event took place, appropriately, under willow
trees at Buxford Meadow, which is part of the Ashford Green Corridor, the
riverside green spaces running through Ashford. When it’s not raining
Buxford Meadow has recorded 12 species of dragonfly and damselfly.
The
event was part of the Kentish Stour Countryside Project’s free summer
Ashford Green Corridor Events Programme. The only event remaining with
places is aimed at older children, adults or the whole family and is
called ‘Picture This’. It takes place on Wednesday 13th
August 10 am – 12 pm, and will be a nature safari with cameras.
