  CANTERBURY GOES BATTY

The Kentish Stour Countryside Project has run bat events at two of Canterbury’s Local Nature Reserves (LNR) over the past few weeks. Jo Haskett (Canterbury Greenspace Officer) Craig Edwards (Voluntary Officer for Canterbury) and Jason Mitchell (Countryside Officer for Canterbury and Lower Stour) have enthralled local people by showing them the nightlife of Britain’s only true flying mammal at Jumping Downs LNR, Barham and No Man’s Orchard LNR, Chartham Hatch.

Despite poor weather, the turnout by the public was good, the No Man’s Orchard event being attended by no fewer than 25 people. All of those attending were given an introductory talk on bats followed by a walk around the sites and by using the latest technology in bat detection and identification several bats were seen, including Serotines, one of the UK’s largest species of bat. Jo Haskett says "It is a great event for families to attend, as bats appeal to all ages. These events are a great opportunity to find out more about these special, endangered species".
