Saracens Cottage

Advice and grant aid was provided for the de-silting of a small pond measuring 4 by 5m in November 2000.

The Parishes of Pluckley and Egerton contain by far the most ponds in the KSCP area. This is because parts of the parishes fall into the Low Weald with its heavy clay geology. Although many ponds have been lost in the countryside in recent years the Low Weald is still dotted with them. However, existing ponds if they are to be maintained as ponds will usually require digging out every so often to stop them succeeding, eventually, to woodland. The best management proposal is often to dig a new pond next to the old one.

Plum Tree Barn

A pond 4 by 8m was created with a puddled clay lining with a grant and advice from the KSCP in April 2000.

Clay is the traditional lining for ponds and in many cases is still more appropriate than material such as butyl (plastic material).

  The Forest

A large woodland pond was de-silted and extended to measure 375m2 with a grant and advice from the KSCP.

Historically ponds were dug in woodlands to provide water for livestock, for material such as clay or stone and for putting out forest fires.
