Authority volunteers installed a stone fish weir in the River Great Stour
to improve fish spawning.

The quality of the river here for fish is
fairly average and has probably declined since the M20 was constructed and
the building of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. This is because silt has
found its way into the river damaging the gravel spawning grounds. The
construction of weirs and deflectors helps to move silt downstream.
Fish species that can still be found include brown
trout, bullhead, eel, gudgeon, perch, roach, stickleback and stone loach.

Hothfield Primary School
The KSCP with a grant from the Rail Link Countryside Initiative will be
creating a wildlife garden in the school grounds. The wildlife garden will
include such features as a wildflower meadow, raised sensory beds, trees,
shrubs, bird feeding station, multi-surface path and a seating area. The
work will be carried out by the children, parents and KSCP volunteers, it
is hoped that the project will be finished by the spring of 2002. The
garden will be an excellent learning facility for the children as well as
providing habitat for wildlife.
To complement the wildlife garden an education pack and series of
interpretive panels are proposed, this will further the use of the
wildlife garden by the children and help them to gain a greater
understanding of their environment.
