  GREAT CHART & SINGLETON

Godinton Park

The Great River Stour runs through this historic parkland and the KSCP has been involved in many projects over the years. In 2000, volunteers helped to plant up part of the river with aquatic plants, and generally improved an area which was suffering from erosion and poaching by cattle.

Fencing of the river took place which was grant aided by the KSCP and Environment Agency in order to create more diverse habitat.

In 1998 volunteers planted riverside standard trees and the National Rivers Authority installed fish weirs to improve fish spawning. Because of a successful Countryside Stewardship application in 2000 volunteers will be involved in a great deal of work in summer 2001.

Ashford Millennium Community Woodland

This Ashford Borough Council initiative is being supported by KSCP, Kent BTCV, Forestry Commission, Woodland Trust and local people. Over the next few years the intention is to fill about 100 acres of what is now mainly arable land to the south west of Ashford with trees.

There will be open areas of grassland amongst the trees. The first phase of planting and fencing started in the winter of 1999/2000 and has been undertaken mainly with local, and KSCP volunteers. Around 10,000 trees have been planted.

The next phase includes a wildflower meadow, sensory gardens and all weather footpath.

Great Chart Playing Field

KSCP volunteers planted 160m of hedge on the playing field perimeter and 20 standard trees in 1998.

Little Chilmington

The KSCP grant aided the restoration of a pond in March 2000.
