Walking is an activity that less
of us are doing in today’s car led society. As well as ensuring that
more short journeys are made on foot or by bike, walking and cycling in
the countryside can provide a healthier lifestyle, fun, learning and
contribute to the rural economy.
Heart disease and obesity are on the increase in the UK
and walking, cycling or even volunteering for your local conservation
group can help to reduce these problems as well as stress.
Walking, cycling and riding with family and friends can
strengthen relationships and provide memorable lifetime experiences.
The best way to learn about the countryside is to visit
it! Although situated in the busy south-east, the Stour Valley provides a
wealth of natural history, heritage and diverse landscapes. The upper part
of the Stour Valley contains the Low Weald, traditionally an enclosed
landscape with many ponds and meadows. The area is one of the most wooded
in the country. The Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with
its rolling chalk grassland, contrasts with the flatter landscapes of the
lower Stour Valley, containing the internationally important Stodmarsh and
Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserves. The whole valley contains many
farms, orchards and occasional hop gardens based around many attractive
villages. Local publications about the countryside with information on
natural history and heritage can help to add enjoyment to an excursion.
Please remember to respect the countryside by following the country code.
There is no doubt that the countryside has changed
significantly in recent years. Many villages have become homes for
commuters rather than rural workers. Using such things as rural transport,
shops, and pubs can help to maintain a thriving rural countryside.
So put on your boots or get on your bike !
