  Recreation Ground Field and Wood

The Playing Fields Association approached the KSCP regarding the management of a wet alder wood and neglected wet arable field which had come into their possession. A management plan will be written in 2001 and with assistance from the Rail Link Countryside Initiative, the wood and, perhaps more urgently, the field will be brought back into management for conservation.

There is only 22 hectares (55acres) of marshy grassland left in the Ashford part of the Stour Valley as much of it has been drained for more intensive agriculture.

During 2001 an in depth survey of the site was carried out. Although the data is still being collated the initial findings are very encouraging. A number of flora and fauna have been identified on the site which are nationally rare. With the use of the survey information a management plan for the site will be written, which will conserve and enhance the site for the benefit of wildlife, whilst allowing the site to be enjoyed by the local community.

If you would like to become involved in this project by, for example, carrying out surveys or doing practical work, please contact the KSCP.
