King’s Wood & Stour Valley Arts

In 1993 the KSCP came up with the idea of commissioning sculpture in a small part of this very large Forestry Commission owned woodland, under the name of Stour Valley Art Project. In October 2000 Stour Valley Arts was formed which is an independent Trust that commissions work in response to the woodland environment in various different media.

  King’s Wood Glade

In March 2001 the KSCP grant aided the Forestry Commission to clear 2 hectares (5 acres) of sweet chestnut coppice. This has created a large woodland glade for informal recreation and an area for wildflowers and animals to colonise. It will add to the value of this vast Site of Nature Conservation Interest.

Glades add diversity to woodlands, in this case hopefully providing conditions for wildflowers such as heather and grasses - sheep’s fescue, common bent and sheep’s sorrel. Butterflies will make use of sunny glades and nightjars might nest in heathy areas.
