  ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SCHEME

The Environmental Stewardship Scheme provides funding to farmers and landowners for better environmental management of their land. The objectives of the scheme are to

bulletConserve biodiversity/ Genetic conservation
bulletMaintain and enhance landscape quality and character
bulletProtect the historic environment and natural resources
bulletPromote public access and understanding of the countryside
bulletFlood management

There are three levels of entry into the scheme. These are:

bulletEntry Level Scheme (ELS)- This is open to all landowners and farmers who manage their land conventionally
bulletOrganic Entry Level Scheme (OELS) – This is open to landowners/farmers who manage their land organically and are not receiving funding from the Organic Aid Scheme or the Organic Farming Scheme
bulletHigher Level Stewardship (HLS) - This is combined with the above options to provide environmental benefits across England.

The deadlines for all three schemes in 2005 are the 31st July, 30th September and the 31st December
