| ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SCHEME
The Environmental Stewardship Scheme provides funding to
farmers and landowners for better environmental management of their land.
The objectives of the scheme are to
 | Conserve biodiversity/ Genetic conservation |
 | Maintain and enhance landscape quality and character |
 | Protect the historic environment and natural
resources |
 | Promote public access and understanding of the
countryside |
 | Flood management |
There are three levels of entry into the scheme. These
are:
 | Entry Level Scheme (ELS)- This is open to all
landowners and farmers who manage their land conventionally |
 | Organic Entry Level Scheme (OELS) – This is open to
landowners/farmers who manage their land organically and are not
receiving funding from the Organic Aid Scheme or the Organic Farming
Scheme |
 | Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) - This is combined
with the above options to provide environmental benefits across
England. |
The deadlines for all three schemes in 2005 are the 31st
July, 30th September and the 31st December
